Mammogram and Breast Imaging Types

ThedaCare provides comprehensive breast imaging services to support early detection, diagnosis and peace of mind. Whether you need routine screening or follow-up imaging, we offer compassionate, connected care, along with advanced technology, including:

  • 2D and 3D Screening Mammography: Uses low-dose X-rays to detect breast cancer and other breast changes before symptoms develop. 3D mammography (breast tomosynthesis) creates multiple images of the breast, improving cancer detection and reducing callbacks for additional imaging.
  • Diagnostic Mammography: Performed to evaluate a breast concern such as a lump, pain, nipple discharge or an abnormal screening mammogram.
  • Breast Ultrasound: Uses sound waves to evaluate breast tissue, distinguish between fluid-filled cysts and solid masses, guide biopsies and assess breast implants. Ultrasound does not use radiation and is safe during pregnancy.
  • Breast MRI: Uses powerful magnets and contrast dye to create highly detailed images of the breast. Breast MRI is often recommended for people at high risk for breast cancer, to evaluate the extent of known breast cancer, assess breast implants or investigate findings from other imaging studies.
  • Breast Biopsy: Removes a small sample of breast tissue for laboratory testing to determine whether an abnormal area is benign or cancerous. Most biopsies are performed using image guidance with ultrasound, mammography or MRI to precisely target the area of concern.

Understanding Mammography and Breast Imaging

Mammography is a critical tool in detecting breast cancer and other conditions early — when they’re most treatable. Depending on your individual needs, your provider may also recommend breast ultrasound, breast MRI or an image-guided breast biopsy to further evaluate an area of concern.

At ThedaCare, we offer advanced imaging technology and experienced radiologists to ensure accurate results and compassionate care. Whether you’re scheduling a routine mammogram or following up on a concern, our breast imaging services are tailored to your needs.

Mammography uses low-dose X-rays to detect abnormalities such as masses and tiny calcium deposits (calcifications). Breast ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate breast tissue without radiation, while breast MRI provides highly detailed images for certain high-risk patients or complex breast conditions. If an abnormal area is found, a breast biopsy can provide a tissue sample to determine whether cancer is present.

Preparing for Your Mammogram or Breast Imaging Appointment

Preparation depends on the type of breast imaging you are having. You’ll receive specific instructions before your appointment.

General preparation includes:

  • Avoid deodorant and lotions: On the day of your mammogram, do not apply deodorant, perfume, powders, ointments or lotions to your breasts or underarms, as they may affect the images.
  • Wear comfortable clothing: A two-piece outfit makes it easier to change for your exam.
  • Medications: Most breast imaging exams do not require you to stop eating or taking medications unless your provider instructs otherwise.
  • Breast MRI: Tell your provider if you have implanted medical devices, metal in your body, kidney disease, are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, or have had a previous reaction to MRI contrast.
  • Breast Biopsy: If you’re scheduled for a biopsy, tell your provider about any allergies, bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medications. You may need to temporarily stop certain medications before your procedure. If sedation is planned, arrange for someone to drive you home afterward.

Please arrive approximately 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your experience will depend on the type of breast imaging being performed.

For a mammogram, a technologist will review your health history, help position your breast on the imaging unit and gently compress the breast while images are taken. Compression lasts only a few seconds for each image. The exam typically takes about 20 minutes.

For a breast ultrasound, warm gel is applied to the skin while a technologist moves a handheld transducer over the breast to create images.

For a breast MRI, you’ll lie face down on a specialized table while the MRI scanner captures detailed images. Many breast MRI exams include contrast administered through an IV.

If a breast biopsy is needed, your provider will numb the area with local anesthesia before using imaging guidance to remove a small tissue sample. Most patients experience pressure rather than pain during the procedure.
