Learn More About Reconstructive & Plastic Surgery Options
Explore our plastic and reconstructive surgery options to learn more about treatments, procedures and what to expect:
Breast reconstruction: Breast reconstruction is a procedure — or multiple procedures — that reconstructs a breast mound. A surgeon can perform reconstruction using implants or your own tissue. The most common reason for breast reconstruction surgery is after a mastectomy for breast cancer treatment.
Breast reduction: A breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, can improve proportions, ease discomfort, increase self-confidence and make it easier to participate in sports and other physical activities.
Gynecomastia (male breast reduction): Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contour.
Facial trauma: Reconstructive procedures of the face restore function and appearance following injury or when dealing with a severe illness such as cancer.
Hand surgery: Plastic and reconstructive surgeons and orthopedic surgeons specialize in procedures using intricate microvascular surgery that is essential for repairs.
Peripheral nerve reconstruction: Peripheral nerve surgery can reconstruct or repair damaged nerves. You may need surgery to repair nerves that are severely compressed, cut or that are not healing on their own.
Scar revision: Scar revision surgery will attempt to minimize a scar so that it is less conspicuous and blends in with the surrounding skin tone and texture. We offer treatment for contractures, facial scars and hypertrophic scars, as well as Z-plasty, a surgical technique to reposition scars.
Skin grafting and flap surgery: Skin grafting transplants skin from one area of the body to another. Flap surgery involves a surgeon moving tissue from one part of the body to another. This is often done to reconstruct a part of the body that has been damaged or removed due to trauma, cancer or infection.
Skin cancer removal: Our team is experienced in many techniques to remove skin cancer from the body. You may have one type or a combination. Options include:
- Excision — This technique surgically removes the skin cancer and a small amount of surrounding normal skin, referred to as the margin.
- Staged excision — Especially suited for treating lentigo malignas, staged excision is also known as “slow Mohs.” It involves a series of skin removal procedures until the surrounding tissue is found to be cancer free.
Tissue expansion: This procedure allows the body to “grow” extra skin for use in reconstructing almost any part of the body. A silicone balloon expander is inserted under the skin near the area to be repaired and then gradually filled with saline or carbon dioxide over time, causing the skin to stretch and grow. It is most commonly used for breast reconstruction following breast removal. It’s also used to repair skin damaged by birth defects, accidents, surgery and in certain cosmetic procedures.
