Understanding Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is a type of medical imaging that shows a continuous, real time X-ray image on a monitor. It’s often done while a contrast dye moves through the part of the body undergoing examination.

A continuous X-ray beam passes through the body part and gets sent to a video monitor. This shows the body part and its motion in detail. Fluoroscopy allows healthcare providers to look at many body systems. These include the skeletal, digestive, urinary, cardiovascular, respiratory and reproductive systems.

Preparing for Your Fluoroscopy

Preparation depends on the type of fluoroscopy exam or procedure you are having.

You may need to refrain from eating and drinking prior to your appointment. Depending on what type of procedure you are having, your doctor may ask that you stop taking certain medications.  You also may need a ride home after your procedure. You’ll receive specific instructions at the time of scheduling.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

When you arrive, you’ll check in and may be asked to change into a gown and remove jewelry or other metal objects that could interfere with the images.

Many fluoroscopy exams use contrast material to improve image quality. Depending on the type of exam, you may be given oral or IV contrast. Your healthcare provider will let you know if contrast is needed for your procedure.

During the exam, the technologist will position you on the X-ray table and then will move the machine over the area for which you’re receiving imaging.

If your fluoroscopy is being used to guide a procedure, such as a biopsy, catheter placement or joint injection, your provider will explain each step and use medications as needed to help keep you comfortable. The length of the exam varies depending on the type of procedure being performed.
