Understanding Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is a type of medical imaging that shows a continuous, real time X-ray image on a monitor. It’s often done while a contrast dye moves through the part of the body undergoing examination.

A continuous X-ray beam passes through the body part and gets sent to a video monitor. This shows the body part and its motion in detail. Fluoroscopy allows health care providers to look at many body systems. These include the skeletal, digestive, urinary, cardiovascular, respiratory and reproductive systems.

Preparing for Your Fluoroscopy

You may need to refrain from eating and drinking prior to your appointment. Depending on what type of procedure you are having, your doctor may ask that you stop taking certain medications.  You also may need a ride home after your procedure. You’ll receive specific instructions at the time of scheduling.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Depending on the type of exam, you may be given oral or IV contrast. During the exam, the technologist will position you on the X-ray table and then will move the machine over the area for which you’re receiving imaging.

Fluoroscopy Results

A board-certified radiologist reviews your images and provides the results to your ordering provider. You’ll be notified of results. If you have MyThedaCare, you can view and reference your results there as well. Your provider will contact you if you require any follow-up.
