Springtime in Wisconsin is finally here. This means green grass, flowers blooming, turkeys gobbling, and the emergence of the ectoparasite commonly known as the tick. Ticks are active already and are hungry. If you spend time outdoors in Wisconsin, you are likely to encounter ticks. What can you do to reduce your chance of having an unhealthy encounter with a tick?
ThedaCare today announced Berlin Memorial Hospital will become ThedaCare Medical Center-Berlin and Wild Rose Community Memorial Hospital will become ThedaCare Medical Center-Wild Rose. The changes will begin to take place in fall of 2015. Both the Berlin-based and Wild Rose-based health systems affiliated with ThedaCare in June 2014. ThedaCare is initiating a system-wide rebranding effort so all of its locations throughout Wisconsin are identified with the same look and feel.

Three weeks ago, Bonnie Ferg of Clintonville was able to hold her 3-year-old grandson. It was the first time since last December she was able to hold him properly.
Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca today announced it will become ThedaCare Medical Center-Waupaca this summer. CEO Craig Kantos said the new name is part of a system-wide rebranding effort that reflects how ThedaCare is redefining better by enriching the patient experience.

The Shawano Medical Center Foundation recently announced $36,598 in grants that were awarded in support of the hospital and other community healthcare efforts. Additionally, Friends of Hospice granted $18,336 in funding to support the Shawano area hospice program for a total of $54,934 in grants.
When you think of all the decisions you make for your child every day–buckling them into a cars eat, applying sunscreen, making sure they are well-rested, etc. There is nothing, in my opinion, more important than the food you choose to prepare for them.

We continue to have an obesity epidemic in this country. The CDC reports that about 35% of the population is obese and that over 65% are overweight based on a body mass index (BMI) of over 25 as overweight and over 30 as obese. Obesity is treatable but it takes a change in lifestyle and a change in the way we eat.
It’s that time of year again – the one referenced in the saying about two seasons in Wisconsin – winter or road construction. Since we've broken the 70 degree mark on the outdoor thermostat, it should be safe to say winter is in our rear view mirror. But look what is ahead – construction season.

ThedaCare is on track to recoup a $1.9 million energy efficiency investment this year, just two years after establishing its department for sustainability in health care. New projects worth $1.5 million will commence in 2015 and be paid off in about two years, said Paul Linzmeyer, sustainability leader for ThedaCare since 2012. His department is charged with helping to improve the health of communities by greatly reducing or eliminating ThedaCare’s energy, waste and water footprint.

On May 20, Wild Rose Community Memorial Hospital will close for one day to upgrade its electrical system. The hospital will temporarily be closed from 7 am and will reopen at 7 am on May 21.

If you are not a Medicare patient this information and discussion may not be of interest to you. But if you are a Medicare patient, I am going to try to explain what I know about the wellness exams that Medicare offers. This has been confusing to me and I think it is confusing to patients also. The federal government, who runs Medicare, has come up with a policy that offers “wellness” visits at no cost. The problem for patients and providers is defining what a wellness visit is.
