Understanding Bone Density Scans

A bone density test, sometimes also called a DEXA scan, uses a small amount of X-ray to measure the amount of mineral in the bones of your lower back, hip and sometimes forearm. This information can help tell your healthcare provider if your bone density is normal or if you are at risk for osteoporosis.

ThedaCare recommends bone density scans for women starting at age 65. Men may need a bone density scan if indicated by their health history.

Preparing for Your Bone Density Scan

A bone density scan requires very little preparation. Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

Before your exam:

  • Tell your technologist if you:
    • Are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
    • Have a hip replacement or other metal in the area being scanned.
    • Have had a recent nuclear medicine scan, CT scan with oral contrast, or an X-ray study using contrast, such as a barium swallow, barium enema, or upper GI exam.
    • Have a severely curved spine.
    • Have had spinal surgery.
    • Have a history of spinal or hip fractures.
    • Are unable to lie comfortably on your back.
  • Bring a list of your current medications and supplements.
  • If you take calcium supplements, you may be asked to stop taking them for 24 hours before your exam.
  • Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, snaps or buttons when possible.
  • Leave jewelry and other metal accessories at home.
  • Eat your normal diet on the day of your exam unless your provider gives you different instructions.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

You’ll wear your street clothes or a patient gown and lie on your back on an exam table. In some cases, your lower legs may be supported on a platform for positioning.

A technologist will operate the bone density machine, which moves slowly over the area being examined. The machine is open and does not feel enclosed. You won’t need any injections or medications for this test.

During your scan:

  • Remain as still as possible.
  • Avoid talking unless instructed by the technologist.
  • Follow all instructions to help ensure clear images and avoid the need to repeat the exam.

Most bone density scans take only a few minutes to complete.
