Understanding Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images within your body without the use of an X-ray. The images show the structure and movement of your body’s internal organs as well as blood flow. Ultrasound is often used for cardiac, obstetrics, gynecologic disorders, and abdominal and musculoskeletal imaging. Teams also use ultrasound for guidance during certain procedures and surgeries.
Accredited Ultrasound You Can Trust
At ThedaCare, we’re proud to offer ultrasound services that meet the highest national standards for safety, image quality and expert care.
- ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Appleton and ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah are accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for general ultrasound imaging. This means experienced technologists perform exams using advanced equipment, and board-certified radiologists review results.
- Encircle Health in Appleton holds specialized ACR accreditation in breast ultrasound, recognizing our commitment to excellence in breast imaging and diagnostics.

ACR accreditation ensures you’re getting care that’s independently evaluated and nationally recognized — so you can feel confident in your results, no matter which accredited ThedaCare location you visit.
Preparing for Your Ultrasound
Depending on the ultrasound exam you’ll have, you may need to fast, drink water, take medication or stop medication. You’ll receive in advance any instructions you need to follow.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
The sonographer will position you on a bed inside the exam room. They will apply gel to the skin around the area undergoing imaging. The gel helps transmit the sound waves. The sonographer will pass a small, handheld instrument back and forth over the exam area. In certain cases, contrast is delivered through IV.
