Take Precautions for Safe Swimming
Swimming can be a great summertime activity and is a lot of fun for kids of all ages, but it can also be very dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken.

Twelve weeks ago, we were in the throes of winter and sports fans were waiting for the Winter Olympics to start. Now, spring has finally made its arrival – we hope – and many sports fans are tuned into the Milwaukee Brewers.
With the summer fast approaching, there is certain to be more children and adolescents participating in organized sports. It is important to know if your child will require a sports physical to participate. If they do, it is important to make an appointment with their doctor well in advance of the start of the sporting season.
You would think training for an athletic event would make it easy to hit 10,000 steps every day. That’s not necessarily the case.
Working on a project – even if it’s improving our health – is easier when done in the group. That’s what four women at the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value discovered by participating in the Pedometer Challenge.
With just a few weeks left in the Pedometer Challenge, sponsored by ThedaCare and ThedaCare Orthopedic Care, I decided to open it up to some of the readers following the participants’ successes — and challenges – on Facebook. I posted the offer on ThedaCare and ThedaCare Orthopedic Care Facebook pages and picked three people to join in the Challenge as it enters its final weeks.
We are in the business of air medical transportation. Almost everywhere we go, we get there by flying. We do this because flying to locations has its benefits. Most notably is speed. When we fly, we can get to where we are going in half the time or better. We also do not need to deal with traffic congestion…very often. And the view…you cannot beat the view.
Life sometimes gets in the way of our plans to exercise daily. Lisa Malak of WFRV Channel 5 and her husband, Rookie of WDUZ 107.5 FM, know that all too well. With busy jobs, 6-year-old twins, and family health issues, getting up and moving isn’t always easy.
As spring slowly arrives, more and more people are swapping their boots for flip flops. While flip flops are great to wear to the pool or on the beach, wearing them for a prolonged period of time can lead to foot pain and problems.
Since the Pedometer Challenge began the second week of February, no one has racked up more steps than Mark Hauser of New London. The secret to getting on average 186,000 steps during the past eight weeks? His job. He’s a mailman in New London, who works six days a week.
What does IFR mean? It is one of two types of flying we use and, it does not stand for “I Follow Roads,” unless the roads we are referring to are the invisible “Highways in the sky.” Technically, though, IFR stands for Instrument Flight Rules as opposed to the other, more common, type of flight that we use – Visual Flight Rules (VFR).
One can rarely watch the evening news without viewing a story about EMS workers risking harm to rescue someone in need. Countless human lives are saved every day because of the brave actions of our emergency first responders. Thank goodness for these selfless people who risk their own lives to save others!
A few married couples are using the Pedometer Challenge as a friendly competition to hopefully help improve their health.
