We are rapidly approaching the shortest day of the year. This means our opportunity for adequate sun exposure is shortened. Although excessive sun exposure to the skin can cause skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer, some limited sun exposure is important for vitamin D metabolism.

Colds and influenza are just a couple illnesses that can put a senior citizen's health at risk during the winter. This is also pneumonia season for seniors and others who are at-risk.

Last week most of us had a chance to enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday. Hopefully you had a chance to spend time with the ones you care about and take time to reflect on the things you have to be thankful for. Thanksgiving is the day of the year designated to be grateful and give thanks for our blessings. Interestingly the feeling of gratitude or thankfulness has been linked to better health.

Tip-overs and furniture falls happen when children pull furniture onto themselves climb on furniture causing it to fall, or push it over onto another child. Young children are not strong enough to lift the furniture off of themselves if they are trapped. Injuries include serious bruising, internal organ injuries and fractures

Cooler temperatures and changing leaves are not only signs that the seasons are changing, but also a reminder that influenza season is right around the corner. Flu – or as influenza is commonly called – is a respiratory illness with coughing, congestion, fever, aches and pains. The Centers for Disease Control recommends everyone over the age of 6 months receive a vaccination against influenza.

One of Daniel Sutton’s recommendations to his patients is to incorporate physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. The hiatus, which allowed him to heal as well as establish a practice and welcome a new child, seemed to help Dr. Sutton, who recently won the Community First Fox Cities ThedaCare Half Marathon at a time of 1:08:46.
