ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah is the only recipient of the University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation Gold Award of Hope. The award recognizes the comprehensive work of hospitals that achieve or exceed the goals of the true donor conversion rate, which measures the percent of medically eligible donors that become donors, and organs transplanted per donor. To receive the gold award, ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah had a true conversation rate of at least 75 percent and organs transplanted per donor rate average of 3.25.
By the end of this summer, all of our ThedaCare facilities will have the same brand identity. When our facilities in Wild Rose and Berlin join the rest of the system with new names that include ThedaCare, easily recognizable signs, and stories and photos that tell of our local impact, patients throughout the nine counties we serve can experience the peace of mind that they’re at the right place for the best health care – no matter where they live.

Fortunately, ovarian cancer is relatively rare. It has a lifetime risk of 1.3 percent. Ovarian cancer is unique to women. Unfortunately, ovarian cancer can be difficult to detect early and difficult to treat because it is often advanced stage disease when diagnosed. Only 45 percent of women with ovarian cancer survive five years. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women behind lung, breast, colon, and pancreas.
When discussing summer safety, people don’t normally think of food, but they should. Summer is prime time for foodborne illnesses since bacteria can multiply rapidly under the right conditions, said Daniel Sutton, MD, a family doctor with ThedaCare Physicians-Waupaca.
Bricks from the recently demolished Shawano Medical Center are being made available to the public as keepsakes, said John Gijsen, director of facilities management-system locations for ThedaCare. “Residents of Shawano have been asking for bricks as mementos of the old Shawano Medical Center. It was a place that meant a lot to the people of this community, so we’ve come up with a plan to give them away.”

The next time you bring in your child for her well visit, don’t be surprised if the doctor mentions checking her cholesterol. While cholesterol checks are normally associated with adults, the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends tweens, teens and young adults between the ages of 11 and 21 get tested, too. The leading reason for the change is the rising rate of obesity among young Americans and the associated health problems.
Radiation therapists are trained to follow specific treatment strategies prescribed by radiation oncologists for treating cancer patients. But for Hilarie, each patient is far more than a treatment strategy; each person is special.
Most 16-year-olds spend their days yearning for that driver’s license, but Nicole Torbeck was already working in the dining room at Heritage Assisted Living (now ThedaCare Heritage). Two short years later, Nicole decided to become a Certified Medication Technician. When she received her degree in 2009, it was a smooth transition at Heritage because she knew and enjoyed being with the residents.
When Danielle Greve began working in oncology nursing, she says her career actually chose her. “My husband is a physical therapist and we were both looking for jobs at the same time,” she remembers. “He received a job offer from Community Health Network, and I noticed they had an opening for an oncology nurse. I applied for the position, interviewed and accepted the job that very day. And I’m so glad I did.”

Educators agree that children of all ages need to keep reading during the summer months. Students can experience significant learning loss, or what is called brain drain, when they do not participate in educational activities. “They could end up scoring lower on standardized tests and lose months of educational skills,” said Brown.
On May 20, fifth grade “Elves R Us” class project representatives from Clay Lamberton Elementary School in Berlin presented a $1,500 check to Berlin Memorial Hospital’s “Helping Hands for Cancer”.

Too often summer snacking is centered around popsicles, potato chips, and cured meats. The key to changing your family’s snacking routine is to change the way you access food in the summer. After all, this is the only time in Wisconsin when our options for sourcing food grow exponentially—think farmers’ markets, roadside stands, pick-your-own berry patches, and community supported agriculture (CSA) subscriptions, not to mention your own garden.
