Lead Radiation Therapist, ThedaCare
Radiation therapists are trained to follow specific treatment strategies prescribed by radiation oncologists for treating cancer patients. But for Hilarie, each patient is far more than a treatment strategy; each person is special.
“Radiation therapy is a deeply rewarding career,” said Hilarie “Treatment regimens can range anywhere from one to seven weeks of daily sessions. We often form strong emotional bonds with patients and their families. For some, our time with them is just a brief detour in their life journey and success means we never see them again. For others, we focus on the positives of their treatments and while we’re with them, we do our very best to make them comfortable.”
Hilarie has been with ThedaCare for 12 years and leads a team of 12 talented people. She enjoys the collaboration and support they give each other as they meet with patients. “We have patients every 15 minutes or so,” said Hilarie. “With patients coming daily we get to know them well. We understand that we are one appointment in a sea of many and coming daily can really take a toll on them. Our team is there to support our patients any way we can to help them through this part of their journey.”
She said the connection with the patients is what motivates her the most. “Each of us has people we have met along the way who stay with us, inspiring us to do our very best for every patient we see. For me, the rewards of being a radiation therapist have surpassed any challenges you might find in any healthcare job.”
Hilarie especially enjoys working with her colleagues throughout the ThedaCare family. “While we maintain a small, home-town, community feeling, the company is very progressive. They truly value each and every employee, taking their comments to heart. It’s a wonderful organization – not just for our patients, but for everyone who works here.”
