Program to Discuss Monitoring Your Blood Sugars, Carbohydrate Intake and Preventing Future Complications
One of the most powerful tools for controlling diabetes is education. ThedaCare offers ongoing classes, education and support to help those with diabetes learn to manage the disease with a personal plan that includes meal and exercise plans.
“Diabetes self-management education is a critical element of care for all people with diabetes and is necessary in order to improve patient outcomes,” said Timothy Houlihan, family physician at ThedaCare Physicians-New London. “By taking the right steps in managing their diabetes, patients will prevent further health complications.”
Diabetes self-management classes cover topics such as monitoring blood sugars and carbohydrate intake, preventing future complications, and making the best menu choices when eating out. ThedaCare program participants lost over 1,000 pounds in 2012 and 80% met the diabetes self-care goals they set for themselves.
“Our classes really give patients the control they need over diabetes,” said Marci Reynolds, RN, CDE and supervisor of the health and wellness department at Riverside Medical Center. “We have many options for education and support. Our programs are run by certified diabetes educators, who are specially trained in all things diabetes.”
Class locations are available at New London Family Medical Center, Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca and ThedaCare Physicians-Shawano. A physician referral is required and insurance may cover all or part of program costs.
