NURSING MOMS GET SUPPORT AT PEDIATRICS APPOINTMENTS
ThedaCare Lactation Consultants Increase Convenience, Access
NEENAH, Wis. – New mothers who choose to nurse their babies, likely have plenty of questions and concerns that extend beyond the birth experience. In the past, experts who specialize in helping mothers and babies establish a successful breastfeeding routine, known as lactation consultants, were located at ThedaCare’s hospital-based birth centers. Recently, outpatient lactation consultants have relocated to ThedaCare pediatrics clinics in Neenah on Deerwood Avenue and Appleton on Enterprise Avenue.
“A mom will return to the pediatrics clinic with her baby many more times than she will need to return to the hospital setting,” said Kelly Turzinski, RN, BSN at ThedaCare Physicians Pediatrics-Neenah Menasha. “She can have the baby’s check-up and schedule a consult with us in the same place, at the same time.”
All breastfeeding mothers are welcome to meet with ThedaCare lactation consultants, even if they are not ThedaCare patients or gave birth in a ThedaCare hospital.
“Our lactation consultants establish many consistent, helping relationships, all with the goal of increasing the success of mothers who breastfeed,” said Turzinski.
The lactation consultants help mothers and babies with breastfeeding techniques, discuss worries mothers may have, do breast pump fittings and help mothers prepare for return to work after maternity leave. They work with mothers to prevent and solve breastfeeding problems such latching difficulties, painful nursing, low milk production or inadequate weight gain.
Mothers who are interested in making an appointment with an outpatient ThedaCare lactation consultant can call ThedaCare Physicians-Pediatrics in Neenah at 920.727.9982 and in Appleton at 920.954.2551. Mothers can also leave a message and a lactation consultant will call them back. That number is 920.729.2154.
