COMMUNITY STROKE DAY 2019

APPLETON, Wis. – Local healthcare systems including Ascension Health, Aurora BayCare Medical Center, Bellin Health, HSHS St. Vincent Hospital, Neuroscience Group and ThedaCare are proud to collaboratively sponsor Community Stroke Day from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28 at the Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve, 4815 N. Lynndale Dr. Appleton. 

This special event, now in its second year, helps connect survivors and their caregivers with others who have experienced similar journeys with life after stroke.

“Things were put into perspective for me after my stroke,” said Joe Romenesko of Darboy. “The journey helped me realize that life was worth living, despite the challenges I faced.”

Romenesko is one of the survivors who will be attending the event. He suffered a severe stroke in 2010 and spent most of 2011 in recovery through either inpatient or outpatient rehab. He relearned how to walk, swallow and complete daily tasks on his own. 

“Nearly a decade after my stroke, it’s important for me to share my story,” he said. “I understand what stroke survivors are going through. It’s difficult. We have to let other people, and their families, know that they are not alone.”  

Activities during the day will range from informative to fun and relaxing. There will be opportunities for education, creativity, exercise, enjoyment of nature and interaction.  Professionals will also be present and can help address specific questions related to recovery after stroke. Snacks, lunch and a light dinner by the bonfire will be provided.

“The day is filled with simple activities to enjoy,” said Kristin Randall, ThedaCare Stroke Coordinator and member of the Community Stroke Day committee. “By just having a day where survivors and their families can come together and feel supported means so much to them. We’re proud that the local health systems understand the importance of an event like this.”
