ThedaCare Puts Focus on Organ Tissue Donation

ThedaCare employees are teaming up to raise awareness about organ and tissue donations.

Employees will Share Information on Wednesday at Encircle Health

ThedaCare employees are teaming up to raise awareness about organ and tissue donations.

Workers from Appleton Medical Center and Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah are volunteering their time to staff a donation awareness and education booth:

  • At Encircle Health, 2500 E. Capitol Drive, Appleton
  • From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • On Wednesday, April 16.

The employees, along with representatives from the Organ and Tissue Organization and American Services Foundation, will pass out brochures and share information about organ and tissue donation. In addition, a computer will be available for people to sign up online for the Wisconsin Donor Registry www.YesIWillWisconsin.com.

Theda Clark Medical Center, the home to the Fox Cities’s Level II Trauma Center, earned Health Resource and Service Administration (HRSA) silver Medal Recognition for Organ Donation. The hospital had 13 organ donors in 2013, with 54 organs transplanted into 46 different recipients. Theda Clark leads the UW Organ and Tissue Donation program’s donor service area, with a donor conversation rate of 93%.

While many people know that organs such as the heart, livers, and kidneys can be donated, body tissues such as bone, heart valves, skin, and veins can also be used. To become a tissue donor, a person must have died a biological death and their heart and lungs have permanently stopped functioning. An estimated 20,000 tissue donors lead to nearly a million tissue transplant surgeries every year in the United States. In addition to signing up online to be a donor, people can also indicate their wishes when applying for and renewing their drivers’ license.
