I was a smoker, and my dad had heart problems. And because of those things, I was religious about my heart checkups. One day, Dr. Lewandowski called about my test results. I know that most times that was not a good thing. He told me I had one leaky heart valve and another one wasn’t in great shape. Because we caught it during a regular checkup and it wasn’t an emergency, I was able to schedule surgery on my terms. The preparation was unbelievable. I had a ton of confidence in the surgeon and his assistant.
I was reluctant about rehab at first, but I was committed to do what I had to do before I went into surgery. I did 29 rehab sessions in all—and I loved it! The people were fantastic. I don’t know if I would have been as committed to exercising if it wasn’t for them. I’ve lived in the area since 1976 and I’ve always gone to ThedaCare. I have no complaints at all. My energy level is back to 100%, and I’m 100% smoke-free.
