I was cutting my lawn when suddenly I couldn’t step on my leg. I tried several remedies but nothing helped. I finally saw Dr. Erickson, who’s also our school’s sports physician. Within 30 seconds he identified the problem as a root tear—it’s when the meniscus is torn away from the side of the bone—and the MRI confirmed it. Repair required a complex surgical procedure which I scheduled but then had to postpone because my wife became critically ill.
In the meantime, whenever I’d see Dr. Erickson at our school’s sporting events, the first thing he’d ask about was my wife and how she was doing, then he’d ask about me. His focus on my entire family struck me as so positive and kind.
Ultimately, I had the surgery and my leg had to be non-weight bearing for six weeks. That was just brutal. I’m a high school principal and I always want to be on the “other side” of the building. I was forced to depend on others but hated to ask. Then a friend said, “If you don’t ask someone for help, you’re denying them the opportunity for grace.” That was good advice as I started rehab right after surgery. The help they gave was phenomenal and the exercises they’ve taught me have worked really well.
