Duanes story Holiday Crisis

I was putting away Christmas decorations when I went into cardiac arrest. When the EMTs arrived, I wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse. They put me into therapeutic hypothermia, which is a procedure they use to help preserve brain function—and it worked. If everybody hadn’t done their jobs as well as they did, my life could have been so different. As my wife will tell you, I was in good hands the entire time. No matter which doctor or specialist was checking on me, everyone was on the same page. And that was comforting. We’ve been with ThedaCare doctors since 1979. We’ve had the chance to make a switch in doctors and healthcare, but we’ve never felt the need to. Especially now.

Before, my life was all about work. Now, it definitely isn’t. I eat healthier. I go to the gym four times a week. We go biking more often. I volunteer more. Little things don’t bother me so much.

We’re going to continue to live our lives and enjoy what we do. We’re fortunate that we can do that.
