An orthopedic surgeon is a specialist in the treatment of injury and ailments of the body’s bones, joints, and soft tissues (muscles, tendons, and ligaments). Dr. Jeff Sundblad of ThedaCare Orthopedic Care is an orthopedic trauma surgeon, also known as a fracture specialist. His additional training enables him to treat traumatic injuries like multiple broken bones, compound fractures, fractures near a joint, or pelvis fractures. “I am working with the sickest, most broken patients. Many are victims of severe accidents. There are so many ways we can help them, and I love being part of that healing and recovery process,” he said.

Tina Bettin has been following legislative issues regarding advance practice nurse practitioners since she began her career nearly 30 years ago. Recently Bettin, DNP, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, APRN, at ThedaCare Physicians-Manawa and New London, was elected to be Wisconsin’s State Representative to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). She takes office later this month at the National Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

This month ThedaCare marks the 15th anniversary of Cherry Meadows inpatient hospice. The only freestanding general inpatient care hospice in northeast Wisconsin, Cherry Meadows is located inside Peabody Manor in south Appleton and features 10 private rooms, 24-hour hospice trained staffing, and unlimited visiting hours.

About a year after Barbara Gruening’s husband passed away, she found she had time on her hands. At a women’s event in Appleton, Gruening, 81, of New London, heard the speaker ask the audience what their passion was. “I leaned over to a friend and said I don’t have a passion,” she said. “At that point in time I had been a caregiver.” But when she reflected on what she enjoyed doing, it was thoughts of the Auxiliary at ThedaCare Medical Center-New London, which she stepped away from when her husband had a stroke. She rejoined the group and has been involved since.

With the support of many the TogethER campaign to expand and renovate the Emergency Department at ThedaCare Medical Center-New London is almost complete. A matching program could push the momentum forward and bring a ground breaking this summer.

The Auxiliary at ThedaCare Care Medical Center-New London is hoping book lovers also have a sweet tooth. The Auxiliary will host a bake sale in addition to a book sale on Mon., April 4. “Bake sales always seem to go well,” said Barbara Gruening, president, noting bake sale success during the annual fall Bazaar.

Area residents will now see visiting specialists at Waushara Family Physicians-Wild Rose, 701 Grove Ave., near Wild Rose Community Memorial Hospital. The move will improve communication between primary care doctors and the specialists and also be more convenient for patients.

Shawano Medical Center is the recipient of a grant for $75,000 each year for up to three years to increase health insurance enrollment and outreach in rural communities. The Rural Outreach Benefits Counseling pilot program is administered by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP). Shawano Medical Center will use the grant to educate eligible uninsured people about their options for health insurance, and to teach newly insured people about how to access primary and preventive health care.

The clinic, which serves more than 6,000 patients at its downtown Appleton location, is home to the Fox Valley Family Medicine Residency Program. Mosaic Family Health is sponsored by Ministry Health Care and ThedaCare.

The ThedaCare Family of Foundations will publicly launch the CONNECT fundraising campaign through a story-collecting project across the communities it serves. The foundation, whose mission is to support ThedaCare health care initiatives, will offer cancer survivors and others impacted by cancer, and the general public, the opportunity to step into a video recording booth and share individual messages of gratitude and wisdom.

The Shawano Medical Center Foundation recently announced $36,598 in grants that were awarded in support of the hospital and other community healthcare efforts. Additionally, Friends of Hospice granted $18,336 in funding to support the Shawano area hospice program for a total of $54,934 in grants.
