It started with a single donation by siblings Pat Prill and Jon Wilsnack of Markesan in memory of their father las March. It ended in early October with the delivery of 18 brand new automated external defibrillator (AED) units to the Green Lake County Sherrif’s Department—one for each emergency vehicle in the department’s force.
A Clintonville school running club is getting an extra kick start from ThedaCare. The Longfellow Running Club received a grant from ThedaCare’s Community Health Improvement to help fund the program, which brings students together twice a week before school for training runs.

Puberty opens the door to a lot of sensitive topics about growth and development. In April, a ThedaCare class at Riverside Medical Center (RMC) in Waupaca seeks to break down barriers so mothers and daughters can address these topics together.

ThedaCare is offering a free educational evening filled with great fun, food and footwear and a fashion show with prizes. “Walk-This-Way Shoe Fashion Show with Dr. Kristen Kuratnick” will help women learn how to choose the right shoes for their feet. This free “girls’ night out” offers expert advice for functional footwear from Dr. Kuratnick, a foot and ankle specialist, and physical therapist Karen Ferris, both from ThedaCare Orthopedic Care.

Pre-diabetes is more prevalent than most people think. “It affects 35 percent of adults age 20 and older and half of Americans age 65 an older,” said Anne Menzies, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca. People can learn more about the topic at an upcoming ThedaCare community presentation “Pre-Diabetes: What should I do?” at 6:30 p.m. on Thurs., April 3, in the lobby of the 900 building.

Stepping On is a free seven-week workshop using adult education to develop the knowledge and skills needed to help older adults prevent falls. In conjunction with the THRIVES (“Teaming for Health & Resiliency Improvement via Education and Support”), Stepping On will be offered starting March 18 at Riverside Medical Center (RMC).

A Wine and Cheese Tasting will benefit the Rural Health Initiative in Waupaca County. The third annual event will be from 7-10 p.m. Fri., April 25, at Crystal Falls Banquet Hall in New London. The Wine and Cheese Tasting will feature 40 kinds of wine, seven beers from Pigeon River Brewing and 40 types of cheese. Uptown will provide the evening’s entertainment.
Effective April 1, 2014, new income limits go into effect for Wisconsin’s BadgerCare Plus health insurance for low-income residents. Adults with family income over the federal poverty level will no longer qualify for this plan. If their employer does not offer health insurance they must enroll in the federal Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov in order to continue coverage.

Studies continue to show the damage stress can have on a person’s mental and physical health. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, a ThedaCare class offered at Riverside Medical Center (RMC), continues to show participants how to recognize, reduce and respond to stress.

On July 9, 2013, Gene Rindt underwent orthopedic surgery at New London Medical Center. In recovery he suddenly became unresponsive, requiring intubation and was transferred to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah to the neurological ICU for evaluation. A CT scan of his brain revealed a slight stroke that caused a seizure. Gene remained in ICU for four days.
A local group consisting of health care providers and professionals hope to equip people in the Waupaca area with classes and resources they need to be proactive and live a healthier life.
