Color Dash Event Raises Money for Waushara County Special Needs Students

Candy Bandt of Wautoma is ready for the 2nd Annual Color Dash on Sat., July 11, which will raise money for iPads for special needs students in Waushara County. Bandt coordinated the event with the students in mind. She talked with teachers and learned about the need. “The schools don’t provide special needs students with iPads,” she said.

Hospice Volunteers and Therapy Dogs Provide Valuable Service

ThedaCare At Home, a not-for-profit hospice, is seeking hospice and pet therapy volunteers in Waupaca, New London and surrounding communities to assist in caring for the terminally ill patients and their families. Currently, there are 30 active regular volunteers and nine pet therapy volunteers.

Dance Back the Night for Awareness

Shelby Mitchell, a sexual assault victim advocate from Safe Haven in Shawano, did not realize how hard it was to belly dance until she had a chance to try it during the organization’s annual fundraiser, Dance Back the Night, in April.

Riverside Medical Center Fun Run Encourages Local Students

On May 2, about 70 Mighty Milers, including runners and family and friends, will once again join the community for the 29th Annual RMC Fun Run, which starts at Old Riverside School. Participants can choose between the 1 mile or 5K races or participate in both races. There is a team challenge of four members to a team as well as a costume contest and prizes.

Wine and Cheese Tasting Benefits Rural Health Initiative

The Rural Health Initiative in Outagamie and Waupaca Counties are hosting the 4th Annual Wine & Cheese Tasting on Fri., April 24 to raise funds and awareness for the organization, which improves the health of area farmers by bringing healthcare directly to them.

Waupaca Pulmonary Support Group Meets

The April meeting of the Waupaca pulmonary support group will include a nutrition question and answer session with Riverside Medical Center dietitian Anne Menzies. “Nutrition is important with our pulmonary patients because the macronutrients we eat can affect out breathing,” said Menzies. “I will emphasize a healthy heart diet as well as talk about the importance of less processed foods and more real foods.”

Free Waupaca Session Explores Solutions for Easing Joint Pain

A free ThedaCare community program is designed to help people who suffer from joint pain. Robert Wubben, MD, of ThedaCare Orthopedics will facilitate “Osteoarthritis: How to Soothe the Joint Pain” on Wed., April 29. Dr. Wubben will have examples of joint replacement prosthetics and will hold a question-and-answer session after the presentation.

Supporting Teens in the Fox Valley

Because May is Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to feature an employee who has been an innovator in the mental health field. Norma Czarnik, clinical substance abuse counselor with ThedaCare Behavioral Health, was instrumental in co-founding and co-facilitating National Alliance on Mental Illness Fox Valley’s first support group for teenagers who are living with mental illness. The Appleton-based group is now one of four NAMI Fox Valley teen support groups.

Free Session Offers Fertility Options

ThedaCare is hosting a free community program designed to help women who are experiencing challenges with conceiving a child. Rami Kaldas, MD, a board-certified gynecologic surgeon and obstetrician, of the Kaldas Center for Fertility, Surgery & Pregnancy, will facilitate “Dreaming of a Bundle of Joy, but Having Challenges?” on Tues., April 21. He will discuss fertility, diagnosis and available options on a budget. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

THRIVES Classes Continue to Provide Benefits

The benefits of the collaborative group’s Teaming for Health and Resiliency Improvement Via Education and Support, or THRIVES, classes are growing. “The studies are there,” said Marci Reynolds, RN and certified diabetes educator at ThedaCare in Waupaca. “We see the results here with participants and know these classes are making a difference in their health and well-being.”

Register Today CHN Helping Hands for Cancer 5K

Registration is now open for the 14th annual CHN Helping Hands for Cancer 5K Run/Walk. The big day is Saturday, May 16th, when Community Health Network will once again open its Berlin Memorial Hospital campus for people of all ages to have fun while raising money for a great cause!

Boardwalk Planned for Navarino

The Navarino Nature Center will install a boardwalk that will go from the nature center and over a near-by pond, thanks to the local fundraising efforts. The project, estimated at $214,000, will allow visitors to enjoy the area surrounding the nature center. ThedaCare, through the Shawano Community Health Action Team, donated $500 recently toward the project.
