Anna Horejs’ life changed forever last Nov. 15 on U.S. 10 in Waupaca County. Horejs, then a senior at Wauwatosa East High School, was driving her family’s van back after a visit at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where she planned to attend college and study computer science and business this coming fall. Her vehicle, however, was hit head-on at highway speed by a driver going the wrong way on U.S. 10, leaving her with multiple serious injuries.

Destry had just turned seven when she started having reoccurring urinary tract infections. I took her to see urologist Dr. Andrew Maes. After an ultrasound and X-rays of her bladder, the tests showed Destry had a calcification in her kidneys, which means her body wasn’t breaking down the calcium or removing it from her kidneys.
ThedaCare At Home Hospice is in need of more volunteers to provide end of life care for individuals where ever they call home. “We could not provide hospice care without the volunteers,” said Sarah Lederer, bereavement/ volunteer coordinator. “They are able to form a relationship with patients through their companionship that other members of the team cannot. They come with no agenda or medical equipment; just a smile, a listening ear, and a caring heart.”
A free ThedaCare community program is designed to help people who suffer from knee pain. Brian Zirgibel, MD, orthopedic surgeon, with ThedaCare Orthopedic Care, will facilitate “Knee Pain/Osteoarthritis” on Tues., July 26. He will explore the latest surgical and non-surgical procedures that can help people ease their pain and get back to enjoying active lifestyles. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

ThedaCare At Home Hospice provides four-legged volunteers that offer a unique service to help ease stress and anxiety among patients.
Bricks from the recently demolished Shawano Medical Center are being made available to the public as keepsakes, said John Gijsen, director of facilities management-system locations for ThedaCare. “Residents of Shawano have been asking for bricks as mementos of the old Shawano Medical Center. It was a place that meant a lot to the people of this community, so we’ve come up with a plan to give them away.”
On May 20, fifth grade “Elves R Us” class project representatives from Clay Lamberton Elementary School in Berlin presented a $1,500 check to Berlin Memorial Hospital’s “Helping Hands for Cancer”.
Jan. 26, 2014, would not be like any other work day for State Trooper Justin Hansen. While assisting at the scene of an accident, he attempted to get something out of his truck when a car at highway speed lost control behind him, spun around and struck him. He was pinned between the two bumpers of the cars, and suffered a near amputation of his right leg and a deformity to his left leg. Due to extreme hemorrhage from his right leg, quick-thinking bystanders applied multiple tourniquets to his leg and successfully began to control the massive bleeding.
