Group Support Helps Patients with Diabetes Self Management

Living with a chronic disease like diabetes can be challenging and frustrating at times. Research shows it is important to have support to face the emotions and challenges that living with a chronic disease can pose.

Living with a chronic disease like diabetes can be challenging and frustrating at times. Research shows it is important to have support to face the emotions and challenges that living with a chronic disease can pose.

“Diabetes is a self-management disease, meaning a person’s daily self-care behaviors strongly impact their diabetes control,” said Beckie Crisman a nurse and certified diabetes educator at Riverside Medical Center (RMC). “Talking with other people who also live with diabetes can give you the support, information and insight you need to help you with your daily management of diabetes. Attending a diabetes support group is a great way to stay up-to-date on current diabetes topics, gain support and learn from others successes and mistakes.”

A diabetes support group has been active for over 20 years at RMC. It is open to anyone living with diabetes or caring for someone with diabetes. “The goal is to offer a safe, non-judgmental, and supportive environment where participants can discuss their concerns, ask questions, share information and ideas, and learn from one another,” said Crisman, noting that each meeting is led by a certified diabetes educator and includes a topic of the day.

The next support group meeting is at 1 p.m. Tues., Dec. 3 in the Health and Wellness Department, in the 900 building. The topic for this meeting is “Navigating the Holidays with Diabetes.” There is no fee for the support group and registration is appreciated but not required.  To register, call 715-258-1119.
