When it comes to puberty, what’s “normal” is a big topic of discussion and concern for both children and their parents. There is a range of normal variation with some children beginning, progressing and advancing through puberty sooner than others. Puberty normally tends to start between ages 9 and 13.

It is estimated that more than 1 percent of the industrialized population suffers from problem wounds. “That is approximately 67 million people,” said Cassandra Munoz, RN, certified wound care from Riverside Medical Center (RMC) in Waupaca, noting information from the Wound Care Education Institute. Patients who are more likely to need wound care include diabetics, people with kidney failure and those who have problems with mobility.
When Brianna Sorge of New London crossed the finish line of the Bellin 10K, she was surprised she finished in 1 hour and 10 minutes. “It was really fun,” said the 11-year-old about her first race. “I thought I could make it. I was kind of surprised that I did finish and the time that I did.” Sorge is part of a running club at New London Middle School, which started at the end of last school year to prepare for the Bellin 10K.
After finishing a Community First Fox Cities Marathon event, some runners and walkers may have a few aches and pains they want checked out. ThedaCare Orthopedic Care is offering a free marathon injury assessment clinic from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wed., Sept. 24, to all participants in the full marathon, half marathon, relay marathon or 5k.

Berlin resident Mary Navin has a heart of gold. This 73-year old is always doing good things for others, but on Oct. 25, 2013, it was all about her. She was alone at home when she suffered a pulmonary embolism that sent her into full cardiac arrest. She was able to get to the phone and call 911 before passing out. Local police officers and EMTs rushed her to Berlin Memorial Hospital.
On Mon., Sept. 22, Kevin Hines will present a program called “Living Mentally Well” beginning at 6 p.m. at Waupaca High School. He will share how to live mentally well and prevent suicides. In 2000, Hines attempted suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and survived.

When the hallways of the new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano come alive in the second half of 2015, Shawano-area nursing students will be part of the hustle and bustle on the healthcare campus. Dorothy Erdmann, CEO of Shawano Medical Center, and Dr. H. Jeffrey Rafn, president of Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, announced today an agreement to offer Shawano’s NWTC nursing programs on site at the brand new medical center starting in fall 2015, the first such collaboration in the state of Wisconsin.
