ThedaCare Doctor Shares about Medical Trip in Peru

Traveling down the Amazon River, reaching out to help people in jungle areas, was how Joe Lamb, MD, family physician at ThedaCare Physicians-New London spent his time in Peru on a recent mission trip with Christ the Rock Community Church in Menasha.

Waupaca Pulmonary Support Group Meets

The April meeting of the Waupaca pulmonary support group will include a nutrition question and answer session with Riverside Medical Center dietitian Anne Menzies. “Nutrition is important with our pulmonary patients because the macronutrients we eat can affect out breathing,” said Menzies. “I will emphasize a healthy heart diet as well as talk about the importance of less processed foods and more real foods.”

This past month I completed a health risk assessment (HRA). This is a procedure that more employers are asking employees to complete. What is an HRA and why are they being done? It is no secret that the cost of health care has been rising rapidly over the last 20 years. Employers have traditionally provided health insurance for its employees as a benefit. The health care costs are a large part of the budget. So, employers are trying to find ways to minimize their health care costs.

Free Waupaca Session Explores Solutions for Easing Joint Pain

A free ThedaCare community program is designed to help people who suffer from joint pain. Robert Wubben, MD, of ThedaCare Orthopedics will facilitate “Osteoarthritis: How to Soothe the Joint Pain” on Wed., April 29. Dr. Wubben will have examples of joint replacement prosthetics and will hold a question-and-answer session after the presentation.

Lets Move

Being physically active is an important way to improve your chances of living longer. Physical activity reduces risk of heart disease by helping to lower blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, and cholesterol. In addition physical activity improves muscle strength, bone strength and balance and therefore decreases chances of falling. Also, physical activity improves mental health and mood.

Billie Sturgeon, NP, is now on the medical staff of Appleton Medical Center and Theda Clark Medical Center as a nurse practitioner specializing in neurosurgery. She is a member of the staff at Neuroscience Group.

Supporting Teens in the Fox Valley

Because May is Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to feature an employee who has been an innovator in the mental health field. Norma Czarnik, clinical substance abuse counselor with ThedaCare Behavioral Health, was instrumental in co-founding and co-facilitating National Alliance on Mental Illness Fox Valley’s first support group for teenagers who are living with mental illness. The Appleton-based group is now one of four NAMI Fox Valley teen support groups.

March 30, 2015 marks National Doctors’ Day and is a great opportunity to thank your own doctors for their service. Each of us, either personally or via family members, has been profoundly touched by a doctor’s compassionate care. Each doctor is committed to keeping us healthy or restoring us to health when sick, so it makes sense to take a few moments each year to acknowledge all they do to improve our lives.

Good to Go Promotes Healthy Habits in Kids

Area students will learn about good nutrition and physical activity through ThedaCare’s new Good to Go initiative. From April 27 to May 1, ThedaCare employees will volunteer at six Northeast Wisconsin schools offering a variety of activities that promote healthy habits in students. Berlin schools will participate the following week, May 4 to May 8.

Free Session Offers Fertility Options

ThedaCare is hosting a free community program designed to help women who are experiencing challenges with conceiving a child. Rami Kaldas, MD, a board-certified gynecologic surgeon and obstetrician, of the Kaldas Center for Fertility, Surgery & Pregnancy, will facilitate “Dreaming of a Bundle of Joy, but Having Challenges?” on Tues., April 21. He will discuss fertility, diagnosis and available options on a budget. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.
