When born, babies have the protection against certain diseases because of the antibodies that were passed from their mother to them through the placenta. Babies who are breast-fed after birth continue to get the benefits of additional antibodies in breastmilk. Ultimately, that protection is only temporary, which is why immunizations are given to children.
Preparations are underway for the annual Community Health Network Diabetes Health Fair. This yearly educational opportunity will be held on Thursday, November 5th from 4:30pm-7:00pm at Berlin’s City Inn, 689 Broadway Street.
“Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction” will be offered from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursdays, Nov. 5, 12, and 19 at the Maasch Education Center, 902 Building, located on the campus of ThedaCare Medical Center-Waupaca. This class will be led by Barb Achten, LMT, and will follow the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction model, which is an evidence based and proven effective method of working to change the way we respond to stress in our bodies.

A free ThedaCare community program in Shawano is designed to help people who suffer from knee pain. Clay Canaday, DO, with ThedaCare Orthopedic Care, will facilitate “I’ve Had Enough of My Knee Pain!” on Wed., Nov. 4. He will explore the latest surgical and non-surgical procedures that can help people ease their pain and get back to enjoying active lifestyles. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Back in 2003, Australian men started growing mustaches in November to spark conversations about men’s health. It was that simple. A man grows facial hair in November (Mustache + November = Movember), his buddies ask him if that’s a mustache or a dead animal on his upper lip, and he has an opportunity to mention that it’s men’s health month.
When Kevin Wilkinson takes the stage this week for a reality-based education program for high school students that shows them the consequences of making poor choices while behind the wheel, he’ll be playing a dual role: father and police officer.

This year, all of the Theda Clark School of Radiologic Technology graduates who were seeking employment with ThedaCare were placed at various ThedaCare facilities. The Theda Clark School of Radiologic Technology is an accredited, two-year program where students develop clinical skills and become certified Registered Radiological Technologists.

Every parent wants to uncover the secret to a peaceful and safely sleeping baby. Traditional advice from a grandma or aunt may provide some helpful tips, but the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued safe infant sleep guidelines that differ in many ways from the old days.
Do pets improve the health of their owners? Most of the time, the answer would be yes. Pets can provide companionship, a reason to be more active, a sense of being needed, and an avenue to socialize with other humans. Some studies have shown that owning pets can lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and decrease loneliness and stress. About two out of three US households own pets. It is estimated that there are over 160 million pet cats and dogs in the US.

Depression can affect a person’s mental and physical well-being. Untreated clinical depression is a serious problem that involves the body, mood and thoughts. It may alter the way a person eats and sleeps. Untreated depression can result in weight gain or loss, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, and irritability. It can lead to risky behaviors and can also ruin relationships, cause problems at work and even affect serious illnesses.
