Every parent wants to uncover the secret to a peaceful and safely sleeping baby. Traditional advice from a grandma or aunt may provide some helpful tips, but the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued safe infant sleep guidelines that differ in many ways from the old days.
Do pets improve the health of their owners? Most of the time, the answer would be yes. Pets can provide companionship, a reason to be more active, a sense of being needed, and an avenue to socialize with other humans. Some studies have shown that owning pets can lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and decrease loneliness and stress. About two out of three US households own pets. It is estimated that there are over 160 million pet cats and dogs in the US.

Depression can affect a person’s mental and physical well-being. Untreated clinical depression is a serious problem that involves the body, mood and thoughts. It may alter the way a person eats and sleeps. Untreated depression can result in weight gain or loss, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, and irritability. It can lead to risky behaviors and can also ruin relationships, cause problems at work and even affect serious illnesses.
“Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction” will be offered from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursdays, Nov. 5, 12, and 19 at the Maasch Education Center, 902 Building, located on the campus of ThedaCare Medical Center-Waupaca. This class will be led by Barb Achten, LMT, and will follow the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction model, which is an evidence based and proven effective method of working to change the way we respond to stress in our bodies.

Influenza is a serious illness and complications can develop. People wind up in the hospital every year because of the flu and unfortunately some people even die from it. Getting vaccinated not only protects your child, it also slows the spread of influenza in the community, which is especially helpful to people, including infants or those with compromised immune systems, who cannot receive the vaccination.
