Gestational diabetes is caused when an expecting mother’s pancreas cannot make enough insulin, a hormone, to keep her blood sugar levels within a target range. During pregnancy, the placenta makes hormones that can make it harder for insulin to work.

Anyone who’s gone for a run has likely experienced a side stitch – that sharp pain across your abdomen, just below the rib cage. While there are a few different theories about what causes them – whether it’s related to muscle fatigue, irregular breathing or what you ate or drank before a run – side stitches can literally stop some runners in their tracks.

Randy Roeper has been named chief operating officer for ThedaCare Physicians. As COO for ThedaCare Physicians, he is responsible for the high level day-to-day planning, coordination and performance improvement at all of ThedaCare Physicians’ primary care clinics throughout Northeast Wisconsin. Roeper will work with the current leadership team to improve clinical and service quality.
ThedaCare family physician Kelli Heindel, MD, MS, FAAFP, received the 2015 Family Physician of the Year Award from the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians.

As a young child in Menasha, Dr. Alisha Fahley remembers going to doctors’ appointments with her parents and her younger sister Katie. Katie has autism, and the family made regular trips to specialists and service providers to help her reach developmental milestones. “That was my earliest exposure to health care,” said Dr. Fahley, MD, a family physician with ThedaCare Physicians-Shawano. “I realized even then that Katie’s care was disjointed. It was frustrating for my parents to keep all of her services organized and her doctors and therapists in touch with one another. Now, as a family doctor, that’s one of my biggest responsibilities—to coordinate patient care.

ThedaCare met Wed., Nov. 11, with business and community leaders at the 2015 New London Community Conversation to discuss changes in health care. Held at Crystal Falls Banquet Hall in New London over breakfast, the annual event is an opportunity for ThedaCare leaders to share information about the past year, look ahead to coming changes, listen to concerns, and take questions.
Nate Bricco of Appleton discovered his passion for patient care while spending time in and out of hospitals with his mother, who was dealing with Guillain-Barre syndrome, which caused her hands and feet to become paralyzed.
Visitors to ThedaCare Physicians in Black Creek will notice a few changes – a new sign out front and a colorful message board inside highlighting a story from a local patient and her provider.

Interventional cardiologist Cherian Varghese, MD, treated a local patient at Appleton Medical Center with a newly approved coronary stent, making this the first patient in Northeastern Wisconsin to benefit from this new, faster-healing technology.
