Your First Fitness Goal

“The mood benefits are addictive. That’s what hooks a lot of people,” said Michael Kagen, MD, of ThedaCare Physicians-Internal Medicine in Appleton. He’s referring to a person’s plan to be more active, which very quickly results in an improved mood and an overall energy boost.

Creating a Safe Sleeping Environment for Your Baby

Babies spend a lot of time sleeping, but unfortunately where they sleep can pose a danger to their health. Babies should always sleep in a crib on their back, with nothing else in the crib. Sleeping in an old crib or one filled with blankets, for example, can lead to a baby being injured or suffocating. Parents and caregivers can take several steps, however, to ensure their baby sleeps in a safe environment:

To Protect and Serve

Jan. 26, 2014, would not be like any other work day for State Trooper Justin Hansen. While assisting at the scene of an accident, he attempted to get something out of his truck when a car at highway speed lost control behind him, spun around and struck him. He was pinned between the two bumpers of the cars, and suffered a near amputation of his right leg and a deformity to his left leg. Due to extreme hemorrhage from his right leg, quick-thinking bystanders applied multiple tourniquets to his leg and successfully began to control the massive bleeding.

Find Your Purpose

Many of us set new fitness and lifestyle goals based on our fear of disease or disability. Frightening pictures of clogged arteries or stories about fatty liver disease can motivate us to jump on the treadmill and opt for quinoa over white rice. This fear, also known as negative conditioning, also has a way of dissipating. You ask yourself, “What are my chances of actually contracting this malady? Why am I panicking about something that might never happen? What if all this time invested in exercise and Mediterranean-style cooking is not really worth it?”

Simple Treatments Can Help End Heel Pain

When people complain about heel pain, I immediately think of plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis causes stabbing pain in the heel and is the most common reason for heel pain. While runners usually get it, plantar fasciitis can affect anyone – especially if they wear shoes that lack adequate support.

When patients come to the inpatient psychiatric unit, they are suffering from mental illness or substance abuse that prevents them from caring for themselves and others they love. ThedaCare psychiatric nurses meet each individual with the same intentions: they are non-judgmental; they seek to keep the person safe; and they help him or her take the first steps toward wholeness and better mental health.

Then and Now

When the first call came in to ThedaStar on June 6, 1986, I am sure the process of a helicopter response and information gathering was totally different than the process today. Think for a minute … you have a motor vehicle crash and need to pinpoint coordinates for a scene. This was accomplished the only way they were able to: with an aviation chart map. There were no advanced computer systems to find this information, like today. You would log the call by hand, writing the information in a logbook.
