What is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple Myeloma is a rare blood cancer with no known cure. Myeloma is a cancer that starts in plasma cells, which is a type of white blood cell (WBC). WBC’s help fight infection. Plasma cells are a type of WBC that makes antibodies which are part of the immune system; thereby, protecting the body form germs. Myeloma begins when a plasma cells become abnormal. As cell division occurs, these abnormal cells collect in the bone marrow.

Miles for Myeloma held the first event in October 2010. We started Miles for Myeloma to support and honor Dr. Mark Chelsky in his struggle with Multiple Myeloma.  Dr. Chelsky was a physician beloved and respected by his patients, colleagues and peers for his unwavering dedication to medicine, compassionate patient care and his sharp wit.

Miles for Myeloma has been held annually since on the first Saturday in October. We continue this event as Dr. Chelsky felt very compassionate about The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). This event has raised over $75,000 for The MMRF.

In his passing, this event has become so much more. It’s an event to celebrate survivors and an event of remembrance to those we have lost without our community. It is our goal to bring more awareness to Multiple Myeloma and we thank those whom have supported this event year after year.

100% of proceeds is donated to The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
