ThedaCare Statement Regarding Development of Current Shawano Medical Center

This morning Dorothy Erdmann, President/CEO of Shawano Medical Center, released this statement in response to the City of Shawano announcing an agreement on the current Shawano Medical Center building. In 2013, ThedaCare began construction of ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano. The new $50 million facility, planned to open this fall, will replace the 84-year-old Shawano Medical Center and create a local center for convenient, coordinated health care.

ThedaCare Donates Building and 6 Acres, City to Take Lead

This morning Dorothy Erdmann, President/CEO of Shawano Medical Center, released this statement in response to the City of Shawano announcing an agreement on the current Shawano Medical Center building. In 2013, ThedaCare began construction of ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano. The new $50 million facility, planned to open this fall, will replace the 84-year-old Shawano Medical Center and create a local center for convenient, coordinated health care.

“ThedaCare is pleased that we reached an agreement with the City of Shawano on a possible redevelopment proposal for the old Shawano hospital property.

“Over the past two years, we have worked in partnership with the city to identify redevelopment opportunities for the 11-acre site.  A city-led task force gathered community input through public forums in 2013. We used this input to approach developers statewide, and several expressed interest. In the end, the city favored a proposal by Mr. Todd Schultz. Mayor Lorna Marquardt and her staff deserve credit for their leadership and direct involvement in bringing the Schultz proposal forward. The city has been working with Mr. Schultz for the past several months to develop the proposal.

“In the spirit of our partnership with the city, ThedaCare will essentially donate the Shawano hospital building and about six acres of land to the development in return for releasing ThedaCare of all future liabilities associated with the existing building and land and the development of the property. The Schultz group also will purchase the six residential properties in the area that Shawano Medical Center Foundation currently owns.

“As the city takes the lead on this project, we are confident that Mayor Marquardt and her team will work hard to turn their concept into a reality for the Shawano community.  The mayor’s passion and willingness to take ownership of this project has been the difference from the start and demonstrates her commitment to the project going forward.

“Everyone at ThedaCare can now focus 100 percent of our energies on finishing construction of the new hospital, planning our move and holding an open house. The 600-plus employees at ThedaCare look forward to opening a new chapter in our community partnerships where we focus every day on improving the health of the greater Shawano area.”

The new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano will be located at County B and Highway 22, immediately adjacent to the clinic that currently houses ThedaCare Physicians-Shawano. Its primary design inspiration is patient-focused and wellness-based health care for individuals and families. The Boldt Co. of Appleton is the project’s general contractor and construction manager and HGA Architects and Engineers of Milwaukee is the architect.
