At the June 3 meeting of the board of directors for Shawano Medical Center, the board unanimously approved plans for the construction of ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano. The new $50 million facility, expected to open in early 2015, will replace the 82-year-old Shawano Medical Center and create a local center for convenient, coordinated health care.

ThedaCare Board of Trustees Meets June 18 to Finalize Plan

At the June 3 meeting of the board of directors for Shawano Medical Center, the board unanimously approved plans for the construction of ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano. The new $50 million facility, expected to open in early 2015, will replace the 82-year-old Shawano Medical Center and create a local center for convenient, coordinated health care.

Dick Koeppen, president of the SMC board, said after the meeting, “This is a momentous and historical event for the people of the Shawano area. We will have a first-class medical center to serve our community for years to come.” When asked about the rich history in the old hospital, he said, “It has served us well all these years, and it has served its usefulness. Being visionary, we have to move on, and we have a great medical partner in ThedaCare.” The ThedaCare Board of Trustees will meet on June 18 to formally review and finalize the submitted plan.

The new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano will be located at County B and Highway 22, immediately adjacent to the clinic that currently houses ThedaCare Physicians-Shawano. Its primary design inspiration is patient-focused and wellness-based health care for individuals and families. The Boldt Co. of Appleton is the project’s general contractor and construction manager and HGA Architects and Engineers of Milwaukee is the architect. A community groundbreaking is planned for July.

Shawano Medical Center is a nonprofit hospital in Shawano. It serves 35,000 people in Shawano, Menominee, and surrounding counties. Shawano Medical Center includes a critical-access (25-bed) hospital, Rehabilitation Services, and Sports Medicine.
