Additional Patient Privacy, Comfort, and Convenience Included

ThedaCare today announced plans for expanding and remodeling ThedaCare Medical Center-New London’s Emergency Department. The project is expected to cost $560,000.

“More than 9,000 patients walk through our Emergency Department doors every year,” said Bill Schmidt, president and CEO of ThedaCare Medical Center-New London. “While the space is functional, we felt it was time to improve the flow for our staff and patients.”

“We have spent many months getting input about the Emergency Department project from our community, employees and, of course, our patients,” continues Schmidt. “We believe we have a solid plan of what we need to do to make the space more comfortable and efficient when families in our community turn to us for emergency care.”

Kandi Schlueter, Emergency Department manager, says the plans include:

  • Expanding the current space by 1,064 feet, bringing the total space for the Emergency Department to 5,564 feet.
  • Creating a distinct reception area with three triage/registration areas.
  • Building a restroom that’s more easily accessible to the waiting area.
  • Creating a new family counseling area for staff members and family members to meet privately.
  • Moving the InstyMed dispenser (a 24-hour prescription dispensing machine) to a more convenient location in the reception area to better assist patients who need this service.
  • Creating a designated area for wheelchair parking.

“The plans will provide additional patient privacy, comfort and convenience for everyone who walks through our doors,” said Schlueter. “We’re beyond excited to see plans for this new Emergency Department to get rolling.” Construction should begin in 2015.
