For Nicole Torbeck Its All About the Personal Connections

Most 16-year-olds spend their days yearning for that driver’s license, but Nicole Torbeck was already working in the dining room at Heritage Assisted Living (now ThedaCare Heritage). Two short years later, Nicole decided to become a Certified Medication Technician. When she received her degree in 2009, it was a smooth transition at Heritage because she knew and enjoyed being with the residents.

Most 16-year-olds spend their days yearning for that driver’s license, but Nicole Torbeck was already working in the dining room at Heritage Assisted Living (now ThedaCare Heritage). Two short years later, Nicole decided to become a Certified Medication Technician, which is reimbursed by ThedaCare. When she became a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in 2009, it was a smooth transition at Heritage because she knew and enjoyed being with the residents.

“I love the resident interaction,” said Nicole. “It is so rewarding taking care of the residents, especially when I know they appreciate me and the care I provide for them.”

Certified Medication Technicians at ThedaCare work closely with residents. Nicole works a PM shift, but notes that each shift has different responsibilities. “When I get to work, I review the day shift report with my coworker and discuss which residents I’ll be helping that day. I generally do two medication passes, once in the late afternoon and another at bedtime. I also collect vital signs and assist with showers and laundry, as needed. My number one priority is always safety. It is so rewarding taking care of these wonderful people.”

Nicole also enjoys her co-workers at ThedaCare. “My co-workers have turned into some of my best friends,” continued Nicole. “My co-workers are reliable, efficient, personable and great team players. I cannot say enough good things about all of them!”

Two years ago, Nicole decided that she loved working with residents so much she wanted to do even more, so she pursued a career as a registered nurse. She graduated in May and is ready to take her state boards. “It has been so convenient to internally transfer with each job at ThedaCare. They have been great at accommodating my nursing school and work schedule. I could not be more grateful.”

As she moves on from Heritage into her role as a registered nurse, Nicole reflects on the connections she made with the residents and looks forward to making more lasting connections in the days and years to come. “My co-workers and I constantly refer back to teamwork, commitment and always providing the best care possible to our residents. There are definitely busy days, but by having such a strong team and ThedaCare’s support, we’re able to tackle each challenge that comes our way. It’s beyond rewarding to be part of such a wonderful organization.”
