Demolition of Old Juliette Manor in Berlin to Start in July

Demolition of the former Juliette Manor nursing home, and prior site of the original hospital in Berlin at 169 E. Huron Street, will begin next month said John Gijsen, director of facilities management-system locations for ThedaCare. “This building is an important part of the history of the community; but due to its age and specialized use, it is more cost effective to remove the building than repurpose the facility.”

Building Materials will be Recycled, Repurposed

Demolition of the former Juliette Manor nursing home, and prior site of the original hospital in Berlin at 169 E. Huron Street, will begin next month said John Gijsen, director of facilities management-system locations for ThedaCare. “This building is an important part of the history of the community; but due to its age and specialized use, it is more cost effective to remove the building than repurpose the facility.”

After asbestos and lead are removed, demolition of the structure will begin, and is expected to take 60-75 days. Once the building has been removed, the property will be marketed to prospective developers.

“The public will not see a wrecking ball at the outset,” Gijsen said. “The building will first be ‘gutted’ on the inside. All interior walls and materials will be removed, separated, and recycled, and only after all these materials are removed will the actual demolition of the shell begin.”   ThedaCare intends to recycle 90 percent of the building, including copper pipes and wires, interior wooden doors, windows, bricks, kitchen equipment, and other building items. Useful fixtures will be repurposed whenever possible.

The newly constructed 37-bed Juliette Manor opened in Berlin on June 9 and is on the campus of Berlin Memorial Hospital.
