April 21 Meeting Covers Nutrition
The April meeting of the Waupaca pulmonary support group will include a nutrition question and answer session with Riverside Medical Center dietitian Anne Menzies. “Nutrition is important with our pulmonary patients because the macronutrients we eat can affect out breathing,” said Menzies. “I will emphasize a healthy heart diet as well as talk about the importance of less processed foods and more real foods.”
The support group meets at 12:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month in the Health and Wellness Department, 900 Building, at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca.
The pulmonary support group is for patients who have graduated from Pulmonary Rehab and also anyone in the community who has a lung condition like COPD, emphysema, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer. “The patients report the biggest benefit is being able to share their experience but most importantly learn from others struggling with the same disease,” said Stephanie Yenter, a registered nurse and coordinator of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.
The support group also provides a continuation of connection for the attendees as well as providing valuable resources and socialization. “Many of the attendees will meet outside of the support group as they have developed friendships over time,” Yenter said.
She said attendees often come with questions and topic ideas they want to discuss. “They live with this disease every day,” she said.
