Mothers, Daughters Talk About Puberty Issues
Puberty opens the door to a lot of sensitive topics about growth and development. In April, a ThedaCare class at Riverside Medical Center (RMC) in Waupaca seeks to break down barriers so mothers and daughters can address these topics together.
“This is a special time for mothers and daughters to learn and discuss the physical and emotional changes that happen during puberty in a relaxed and fun environment,” said Beckie Crisman, registered nurse and certified diabetes educator. “We hope to help open the lines of communication between mothers and daughters on this sensitive topic.”
“Especially for Girls: What’s Happening to Me?” is designed for girls age 9-12. It covers topics about girls’ changing bodies, menstruation, an overview of hygiene products, emotional changes and issues regarding self-esteem, healthy eating, development and body image. It is not a sex education class.
Crisman said the class is interactive and allows mothers and daughters to be open about the topic and share thoughts. Communication is important so that girls can feel comfortable approaching their mother with questions. “Daughters can learn a lot from their moms and what they went through,” she said.
“Especially for Girls: What’s Happening to Me?” is from 9 a.m. to noon on Sat., April 5, in the Maasch Room, in 902 Building, Suite 202. The fee is $20 for each mother/daughter pair or $30 for mother and two daughters. To register, call (715) 258-1119 or register online here.
