January Dates Set for All-Day Skating, Skiing Fun for 500 Students

ThedaCare Physicians-Oshkosh family medicine physician Eric Smiltneek, MD, is excited the snow and cold weather have arrived since that means members of the Webster Stanley Elementary and Middle School skating club can get outside even more now to enjoy winter sporting activities.

Dr. Smiltneek and Steve Eliasen, a member of the Oshkosh Board of Education, formed the skating club last winter and this year added cross-country skiing to their activities.  They are expanding Dr. Eric’s Skate Club to celebrate the high interest in winter activities,

  • On Thurs., Jan. 22, each grade at Webster Stanley Middle School will take turns skiing and skating between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Miller’s Bay. Dr. Smiltneek said community members are welcome to join the 350 students on the ice.
  • Students in grades 3 through 5 will have an opportunity to ski and skate from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 29. The public is also invited to participate.

Students can also participate in the regular afterschool skating club on both dates. Students skate and ski using donated equipment or skates or skis purchased with donated funds.

“I would especially like to thank ThedaCare, the Oshkosh Community Foundation, and NeuroSpine Center of Wisconsin for their financial support in helping to get 500 students outside skating and skiing,” Dr. Smiltneek said. “I also want to thank the Webster Stanley campus for their spectacular enthusiasm for the program.”
