Class Helps Girls Navigate Physical, Emotional Changes of Growing Up

Riverside Medical Center (RMC) is offering a mother-daughter class on puberty in April that will help them address the sensitive topics of physical and emotional development.

“Especially for Girls: What’s Happening to Me?” is taught in a fun and relaxing environment. “It’s a great mom and daughter experience,” said Beckie Crisman RN, CDE, noting that they “get that mom and daughter connection, to get them talking about growth and development.”

Designed for girls ages 9-12, the class includes talk about girls’ changing bodies, menstruation, an overview of hygiene products, emotional changes and issues regarding self-esteem, healthy eating, development and body image. It is not a sex education class.

The moms even have a chance to share some of their own stories, adding to the communication between mother and daughter. “In the class we talk about embarrassing situations,” said Crisman. “All the moms have stories too.”

The pair will also do a special photo frame craft. “It’s such a fun class to teach,” said Crisman.

“Especially for Girls: What’s Happening to Me?” is at 9 a.m. to noon on Sat., April 13. The fee is $20 for each mother/daughter pair or $30 for mother and two daughters. To register, call (715) 258-1119 or visit www.thedacare.org.
