Healthy Lifestyle Goals are Attainable

All too often, people have the best intentions to improve their health in the New Year. Some are successful but, more often than we care to admit, those intentions can go by the wayside. Healthy lifestyle goals are attainable with these tips.

All too often, people have the best intentions to improve their health in the New Year. Some are successful but, more often than we care to admit, those intentions can go by the wayside.

Healthy lifestyle goals are attainable with these tips.

  • Start by setting specific goals. Don’t just say you’re going to lose weight.  Be specific with the goal. Like losing 10 pounds or drinking three  glasses of water a day. Specific goals make it easier to be successful.
  • Stay motivated by writing the goal down. Even consider printing it out and posting it where you can see it every day.
  • Enlist the support of friends and family. Tell them what you are working toward. They can help keep you on track.
  • Find an accountability partner or group.
  • Make sure the goals are realistic. If you don’t have time to work out for an hour each day aim for 30 minutes most days of the week. You can even break it down into 10 minute- increments a few times a day. Want to stop drinking soda? Start by eliminating one can a day.
  • Make a short term goal and a long term goal. For instance, a short term goal could be walking 30 minutes at least three days a week and a long term goal could be running a 5K in the spring. As you have success with your short term goal adjust the goal incrementally to increase your activity and bring closer to your long term goal. A short term goal can help you achieve your long term goal.
  • Reevaluate your goals. If you are in a slump or finding excuses not to meet the goals take another look at them. Why is it not working? What can you do differently? What resources can you use to reach the goal? Many resources help you achieve your goals. Find a support group. Join a fitness group. Find a workout partner. Involve family in the process. Realize the potential to make goals happen.
  • Lastly, don’t be afraid of failure. Things can go along smoothly but, let’s face it, bumps can come along the way. Don’t give up! Realize this can happen and be ready to overcome any obstacles.  If you fall off the horse get back on it! Small incremental changes can lead to long term success.
