Keep Kids Hydrated this Summer

Summer is finally here and I want to make sure my child says well hydrated as they enjoy fun in the sun. With all the products out there what’s the best way to do this?

Q: Summer is finally here and I want to make sure my child says well hydrated as they enjoy fun in the sun.  With all the products out there what’s the best way to do this?

A: Water, water, water!!!  Sport and energy drinks including fortified waters are being marketed to children and adolescents for a variety of inappropriate uses.  Studies have shown that for the average child engaged in regular activity or moderate exercise water is the best source of hydration along with limited amounts of fruit juices (6-8 ounces a day) and skim milk as a source of vitamin D.  Vitamin enhanced waters are not usually necessary since these vitamins can easily be found in a normal well balanced diet.

Furthermore frequent or excessive use of caloric sport drinks or carbonated beverages increases overall daily calories without significant nutritional value. This can lead to increased risk for overweight or obesity and dental caries (cavities).
