100 MEN FOR HOSPICE EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS & PROGRAM AWARENESS
Ron Green Honors Wife’s Memory
Eighteen years ago, after Ron Green’s wife Anne had battled ovarian cancer for almost three and a half years, they transitioned her into the ThedaCare Home Hospice program, which enabled her to comfortably stay at home during her final days. On the difficult morning that Anne passed away, Green received support from the program to manage the necessary calls and arrangements.
“The hospice nurse provides care and comfort to family members,” Green said. “He or she becomes part of your family at a time when the only other option would be for your loved one to stay in the hospital.”
The experience was so valuable to Green that he began serving on the ThedaCare Hospice Foundation board and during that time helped establish a fund in Anne’s memory that distributed nearly $85,000 in scholarships over 10 years to students in Fox Valley area high schools. “The beauty of that is my four boys had the opportunity to present those scholarships to different high schools in the area,” Green said. “It was a wonderful way for the boys to work through their grief.”
Green also established a fund to regularly provide fresh flowers to the ThedaCare Regional Cancer Center and to Cherry Meadows inpatient hospice, which continues today. Now, Green is an organizer of the upcoming 100 Men for Hospice event, a casual men’s night to raise funds and awareness to enhance hospice programs.
“It’s amazing how many people have direct experiences with hospice,” Green said. “The event is a great opportunity for people to get involved and learn more about the important services it provides.”
The second annual event, which is similar to the 100 Women for Hospice event, is planned for 5:30-7:30 p.m. October 9 at the Fox Club inside the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton. “We thought it was a great place to have it – guys like to go to the ball park, and our objective is to encourage men to come to the Fox Club and gain a better understanding of what hospice is all about,” Green said.
