AIR FORCE VETERAN CARED FOR SPECIAL OPS PERSONNEL
Rebecca Doro, DO, now caring for families in Kimberly
KIMBERLY, Wis. – Dr. Rebecca Doro’s grandfather was a U.S. Army Green Beret, serving in Vietnam. He was also an inspiration for Dr. Doro, guiding her into her first career path, the military, which eventually lead her to family medicine and ThedaCare Physicians-Kimberly.
“I always knew I wanted to work in health care. For a while I considered physical therapy, then optometry and finally decided on medical school,” said Dr. Doro.
She spent seven years in the United States Air Force, including service at Cannon Air Force Base (AFB) in New Mexico, a special operations base. Dr. Doro explained that time was exciting and reminded her of the extraordinary service of her grandfather.
“The people who join the military are some of the best people,” she said. “They are patriotic and treat one another as family. It was such an honor to care for people who do such difficult jobs.”
Dr. Doro met her husband, Joe, while she was a medical resident at Eglin AFB in Florida. He was a direct support operator, or a specialist in cryptology, in the Air Force Special Operations Command.
And they had another special connection — they were both from Wisconsin. Dr. Doro is a native of Wautoma; her husband is from West Bend. In fact, she was born at the hospital in Wild Rose, which is now ThedaCare Medical Center-Wild Rose. The bond they shared would eventually bring the family back to the Badger State. They have two children. Alice is two-years-old and Luke is six-months.
“Now we are back here at home in Wisconsin with our kids,” she said. “Being a mother is the best job I’ve ever had.”
Dr. Doro attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for her undergraduate studies before going to medical school at A.T. Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri.
An admitted sports fanatic, Dr. Doro and her husband had their wedding at Lambeau Field and closely follow the Brewers and Timber Rattlers as well. In her free time, she likes to create scrapbooks, photo collages and decorate her children’s rooms.
Joe currently attends the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and is studying business. He has future plans of opening a craft brewery.
Dr. Doro said for her family, everything is falling into place.
“It’s good to be home,” she said.
