Building Materials to be Recycled, Repurposed
Demolition of the vacated Shawano Medical Center at 309 Bartlett Street will begin today, April 4, said John Gijsen, director of facilities management system locations for ThedaCare. In March, the Shawano Common Council approved the plan from ThedaCare to demolish the structure at its own expense after multiple redevelopment efforts for the existing building fell through.
Lead has already been removed from the property by Green Bay Lead Inc. The majority of asbestos was removed years ago, and Aeroloc Inc. of Clintonville is contracted to complete the remaining remediation work.
Statewide Razing of Combined Locks will complete the actual demolition. “The public will not see a wrecking ball at the outset,” Gijsen said. “The building will first be ‘gutted’ on the inside. All interior walls and materials will be removed, separated, and recycled, and only after all these materials are removed will the actual demolition of the shell begin.”
ThedaCare intends to recycle 90 percent of the building, including copper pipes and wires, interior wooden doors, windows, bricks, kitchen equipment, and other building items.
The new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano opened in September 2015 at 100 County Road B, at which time the 10-acre riverside campus was shuttered.
There will be a public viewing space for the demolition at the parking lot on the corner of 3rd and Bartlett Streets. Demolition will be complete by mid-June.
