Waupaca Diabetes Support Group Renamed

The Diabetic Education Department at ThedaCare Medical Center-Waupaca is switching things up a bit this New Year with its diabetes support group. The renamed Diabetes Adventure Group will offer meetings at off-site community locations like a grocery store, restaurant and apple orchard.

New Format is more about Hands-On Diabetes Management

The Diabetic Education Department at ThedaCare Medical Center-Waupaca is switching things up a bit this New Year with its diabetes support group.

The renamed Diabetes Adventure Group will offer meetings at off-site community locations like a grocery store, restaurant and apple orchard. “This is a great opportunity for people with diabetes to learn from other experts in the field,” said Anne Menzies, certified diabetes educator at ThedaCare Physicians-Waupaca.

The Adventure Group meets every other month on the first Tuesday of the month. Meetings are free but pre-registration is required.

A support group is an essential part in diabetes management, Menzies added. “It helps people focus on the fact that they are not in this alone and gives them an opportunity to learn from others who may be having some of the same problems they are,” she said. “It’s amazing how much we learn from each other.”

The first off-site meeting on Feb. 2 will be at Piggly Wiggly to tour the grocery store, learn how to read labels, make healthy product choices and learn how to create a healthy shopping list.

On April 5 the group will meet at Advanced Family Eyecare to learn about the importance of eye health and how to prevent complications due to diabetes.

There will be a healthy cooking class on June 7 at the Riverside School building. “Participants will cook along with us and then taste our creations,” said Menzies.

The Aug. 2 meeting will be at the 900 Building to hear from a guest speaker nurse practitioner on how to make the most of medical appointments.

The year will wrap up with an apple orchard tour on Oct. 4 and a meal on Dec. 6 at a restaurant to learn how to eat out while watching diet with diabetes.
