Trauma Surgeon discusses medical career with students
Dr. Ray Georgen and ThedaStar visit Berlin High School
BERLIN, Wis. – Most high school juniors and seniors are beginning to think about their future and possible careers. In Berlin High School’s Medical Terminology class, many of the students are considering a career in the medical field. With hundreds of options to choose from, the students received some insight from an experienced surgeon.
Dr. Ray Georgen, a trauma surgeon at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah, recently spoke with the students. He was joined by flight nurses with ThedaStar.
During Dr. Georgen’s discussion with the students, he described his path into medicine, through his undergraduate program, medical school and residency. He also described the different specialties for physicians.
“When I got to general surgery, I knew it was for me,” said Dr. Georgen. “With trauma surgery, you have to make split-second decisions. You never know what’s coming.”
He is a graduate of Loyola Stritch University receiving his general surgery and trauma training at Loyola University Medical Center, both in Maywood, Illinois.
Dr. Georgen developed the Level II trauma center at, what was then known as Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah. The Level II trauma center was verified in 1998.
“For me, there is no greater reward than helping people during difficult times,” he said. “It’s an honor to be there for patients and their families when they need it most.”
Students in the Medical Terminology Class walked from the high school to ThedaCare Medical Center-Berlin where ThedaStar landed and flight nurses discussed their careers. They explained the training necessary to be a member of the crew. Students were given the opportunity to look inside the helicopter and get a first-hand glimpse into the life of a flight nurse.
