Destrys Story

Destry had just turned seven when she started having reoccurring urinary tract infections. I took her to see urologist Dr. Andrew Maes. After an ultrasound and X-rays of her bladder, the tests showed Destry had a calcification in her kidneys, which means her body wasn’t breaking down the calcium or removing it from her kidneys.

Destry’s story, as told by her mom, Desiree

Destry had just turned seven when she started having reoccurring urinary tract infections. I took her to see urologist Dr. Andrew Maes. After an ultrasound and X-rays of her bladder, the tests showed Destry had a calcification in her kidneys, which means her body wasn’t breaking down the calcium or removing it from her kidneys.

Dr. Maes was very caring and concerned and referred Destry to a pediatric nephrologist where she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. It is gut-wrenching to see her have blood draws and take medications all the time. It breaks my heart to hear her say, “Mommy, I wish this didn’t happen to me.”

Even though Destry’s care is overseen by specialists, Dr. Maes was instrumental in ordering the necessary tests to help in the diagnosis. He continues a close relationship with her and our family, as well as connecting with her primary care provider and reviewing her medical records.
