Travel Guidance and COVID-19

Last updated: June 29, 2020

Summer is here and states are slowly starting to reopen. But it is safe to travel? Can you start planning that much needed vacation? To help inform your decision, here are some key things to keep in mind.

Consider the risks

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) clearly states that travel increases your chances of getting infected and spreading COVID-19. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting sick. But for those who are thinking of traveling, the CDC answers several questions you may have.

Know the numbers

Track the spread of COVID-19 at your desired destination to lower your chances of getting sick.

And check the number of cases in your own community. Even if you don’t have symptoms, you can spread COVID-19 to others while traveling.

Follow travel restrictions

Stay up-to-date with the latest rules by checking your state or local health department website.

Note that some areas may require you to stay home for 14 days after traveling. Planning an international trip? Be sure to check travel advisories by country.

Protect yourself and others

Whether you’re thinking of driving, flying, or taking public transportation, it’s important to take basic COVID-19 precautions. Focus on good habits like washing your hands often, not touching your face, and keeping physical distance from others. Think about whether or not you can practice these behaviors on your trip. Ask yourself:

  • Will I be sitting near others for long periods of time?
  • Will I need to use public restrooms or dining options?
  • Will I be able to wash my hands before and after eating?
  • Do I feel comfortable that my surroundings will be disinfected?

Keep health and safety a top priority. And as always, stay home if you are feeling sick.
