Title:  New System – Proctoring and Precepting Policy

QUESTIONMESSAGE
What?A system policy was created and approved regarding Proctoring and Precepting
Why?Not all medical staffs had a proctoring policy.  The proctoring policies that were in place did not provide a mechanism for providers already credentialed in the system to be able to be proctored at another hospital within the system without going thru the complete initial credentialing process again.  Precepting was added to assist providers who currently hold a privilege at a ThedaCare Hospital to revise skills or learn new skills for procedures they have not performed recently, had low volume, or quality concerns. This policy outlines the credentialing process for a proctor or preceptor that might be new to the system or already on staff at a ThedaCare Hospital.
How does it relate to the “big picture?”Proctoring and/or Precepting can only occur once the Credentials Committee (if applicable) and Medical Executive Committee recommend the requesting provider who holds an appointment to start proctoring.     The Credentials Committee and Medical Executive Committee determines if the appointed provider needs proctoring or precepting given the definitions outlined in the policy.
What do you need me/us to do differently?Be aware of this policy and review this if you are intending to be proctored by another provider within the system or are planning on having a non-staff provider credentialed to proctor or precept.   Independent Providers will need to check and make sure their liability coverage covers to be a proctor or preceptor.  This documentation will be requested at the time of credentialing if a provider is asked to be a proctor or preceptor for another medical staff member.   ThedaCare Employed physicians are covered under the liability insurance thru ThedaCare to be a proctor or preceptor.
What’s in it for me/us?Can assist providers who may need to revise skills or learn new skills for procedures they have not performed recently, have had low volume on or quality concern.
How do you access the policy? The policy can be found via the ShareWell page. You need to be logged into the ThedaCare system with your log-in and password.  Below is the hyperlink to the policy center page where the policy is located:   Policy 876-Proctoring and Precepting Policy   Or you can contact the Medical Staff Office at the Hospital you hold an appointment at to assist you in getting a copy of the policy.  Here is the hyperlink to the Medical Staff Services Web Page that has the contact emails and phone numbers for each Medical staff Office:    Medical Staff Services Webpage
