Home Preparation Plan

Last updated: June 4, 2020

Creating a household plan can help protect you and your loved ones from COVID-19. Here are some key steps you can take to stay safe and be prepared in case of illness.

Stay informed. Check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for the latest COVID-19 information. Subscribe to local or state updates from your public officials and governor.

Follow everyday precautions. Communicate with everyone in your household about the importance of social distancing, regular handwashing, and disinfecting practices.

Watch for symptoms. Call your doctor if you are experiencing COVID-19 signs or symptoms. Stay home and limit your contact with others as much as possible.

Plan for illness. If possible, identify a room and bathroom in your home that can be used to separate a sick household member from others.

Get medical and health supplies. Make sure to have a 30-day supply of personal medicines.

Cloth or disposable face masks, a thermometer, and over-the-counter medicines can also be helpful to have at the ready.

Store food and essentials. It’s a good idea to have at least a one- or two-week supply (no need to panic buy). This may include non-perishable food items, frozen meals, water, and toilet paper.

Explore community resources. Organizations are here and ready to help with things like food deliveries, caregiving support, housing, mental health services, and more.

Create a list of emergency contacts. Be sure to have a list of healthcare providers, your local public health department, family, friends, and neighbors that you can call anytime.
